Built for Mountain View County weather

Halfway between Calgary and Red Deer. What a Didsbury roof has to take.

Didsbury sits in Mountain View County, about halfway between Calgary and Red Deer, with the foothills rising to the west. Summer storms here bring hail and, on July 1, 2023, an EF4 tornado. Winters are long. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where its limits are.

Tornado

Canada Day, 2023

On July 1, 2023 a tornado formed southwest of Didsbury and tracked 15.3 km east to north of Carstairs. The Northern Tornadoes Project rated it EF4, with winds estimated at 275 km/h, and it destroyed several houses and farm buildings. No roof covering is built for that. What we can say is narrower: Interlock panels lock on four sides with concealed fasteners, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Hail

Summer hail in central Alberta

Insurance Bureau of Canada puts hail damage in Alberta at about $6 billion over the five years to 2025. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Large enough hail can still dent metal, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

Older homes

A town with history

Didsbury became a town in 1906, and many houses in and around it have had more than one roof. Cedar must come off before an Interlock roof goes on; one layer of asphalt may stay only if the inspection finds it suitable. The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, so an older frame is not asked to carry tile-like weight.

Foothills

West toward Cremona and Water Valley

Along the Cowboy Trail the land turns to foothills, with more trees around homes. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises against wood shakes. Our roofs can be built as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum does not burn; still, no roof is fireproof.

Snow

Sliding snow, and ice dams

Snow lets go of aluminum more easily than of shingles, so snow guards are planned over doors, decks and walkways. Ice dams start when attic heat melts snow that refreezes at the eaves; the material warranty excludes ice damming, so we go over insulation and ventilation with you instead of promising the roof will stop them.

Permits

Who handles permits in Didsbury

The Town of Didsbury says IJD Inspections Ltd. handles all Safety Codes Permits for the Town. Carstairs and Cremona are separate municipalities, and Water Valley is in Mountain View County. Whether a re-roof needs a permit depends on the work, so we confirm it for your address before we start.

Why Didsbury homeowners choose aluminum

The last roof for a Didsbury house. And the company behind it.

Installer

Our crews, start to finish

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. installs every roof itself. The company that inspects and prices your Didsbury roof is the one that installs it and takes the call if anything needs attention later.

Slate

Slate, mostly

Almost every Didsbury roof in our job book is the Slate profile. Cedar Shingle and Shake are there for a wood look, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam for something different, all in nine colours and all needing a slope of at least 3/12.

Outbuildings

House, garage and shop alike

On a Mountain View County property the house, garage and shop can all take the same profile and colour. Each building is measured and priced on its own, so you can do them in the same year or spread them out.

Warranties

What is covered, in writing

Interlock Roofing's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the aluminum and finish while the original purchaser owns the home; it transfers once and excludes workmanship. Our own 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty sits on top, for the installation.

Straight answers

Didsbury roofing questions, answered without the sales pitch.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Didsbury?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta since 1999, installs every Didsbury roof with its own crews from its office in Calgary. There is no office in Didsbury; consultations are on Zoom or at your home. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Didsbury?

It depends on the work. The Town of Didsbury says IJD Inspections Ltd. handles all Safety Codes Permits for the Town, and that a building permit may be needed where upgrades are required to meet the Alberta Building Code. Carstairs and Cremona have their own offices, and Water Valley is in Mountain View County. We confirm what your roof needs before we start.

Can a metal roof survive a storm like the 2023 Didsbury tornado?

No roof covering is designed for an EF4 tornado; the Northern Tornadoes Project estimated its winds at 275 km/h. Our roofs are warranted for wind to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification, which covers the strong gusts and summer storms Didsbury sees far more often. For hail, Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products, but no roof is immune: the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and storm damage is a matter for your home insurance.

Which communities does didsburyroofing.com cover?

Didsbury, Carstairs, Cremona and Water Valley. Calgary and the rest of Southern and Central Alberta are on calgarymetalroofing.com, which is the same company, office, crews and warranties.

Do you only install Slate?

No. Slate is what most Didsbury homeowners have chosen, but every Interlock® profile is available here: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, in nine colours. We bring samples to the consultation.

What does a metal roof cost in Didsbury?

Our cost page shows real contract prices from Interlock® roofs signed in the Calgary and Southern Alberta market in 2025 and 2026. They are a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for an accurate price. The consultation and the written quote are free.
